Medical Marijuana Doctors in Oregon

Oregon was one of the first states to legalize medical marijuana in 1998. In 2014, the passage of Oregon Ballot Measure 91 made recreational use of marijuana also legal, with taxation and regulation guidelines controlled by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. Oregon’s medical marijuana program is governed by the Department of Health and Human Services, which also oversees certification of medical marijuana doctors in Oregon.

Only an “attending physician” can write recommendations for medical cannabis patients. A Doctor of Osteopathy and a Doctor of Medicine are considered attending physicians under Oregon’s MMJ laws. Chiropractors, nurse practitioners and naturopaths are not considered attending physicians and are not permitted to write medical marijuana recommendations in Oregon. Attending MMJ physicians provide primary health care for patients, provide specialty medical care and/or treatment for patients according to rules established by the American Board of Medical Specialties, and have fully reviewed a patient’s health records, conducted a physical exam and provided follow-up care.

Marijuana doctors in Oregon help patients qualify for their MMJ card by performing x-rays, lab tests, physical therapy and gathering additional medical records from other doctors. Chiropractors and acupuncturists are not considered attending physicians, but their medical diagnoses may be included when an MMJ doctor writes a recommendation. Qualifying conditions for MMJ include the following:

Upon an Oregon medical marijuana doctor submitting a recommendation to the Department of Health, patients may receive their MMJ card in as little as 48 hours.

Medical marijuana patients can have their doctors write recommendations for up to 24 ounces of cannabis at any given time. Patients may also cultivate and possess six mature plants and 18 immature seedlings at one given time. Anyone, including marijuana doctors in Oregon, can submit petitions to the Department of Health and Human Services for adding diseases or disorders that are not on the list of qualifying conditions. The DHHS will evaluate the petition and either approve or deny the request within six months of receiving a petition.
